PreValuate™: Electronic Behavioral Health Assessments—Strengthening Patient Care
Self-administered behavioral health assessments uncover hidden or unspoken care needs. They help primary care providers catch mental health and substance abuse concerns as early as possible. They also give behavioral health providers a valuable, ongoing record of the patient’s self-reported wellbeing.
In the most severe cases, assessments save lives.
How Behavioral Health Assessments Affect Reimbursement and Quality Scores
As payers and regulators have come to realize the overarching importance and impact of behavioral health, they’ve looked for ways to incentivize regularly assessing it.
Under quality-focused initiatives like MACRA and MIPS, behavioral health is at the center of how every provider is measured. Commercial value-based reimbursement models often require regularly assessing a patient’s behavioral health as well. And increasingly, commercial and government fee-for-service agreements include behavioral health assessments as a reimbursable service.
Manually scoring paper-based assessments is cumbersome and time-consuming. It also creates the risk of delays and errors in the scoring process. Often, even if providers offer paper-based assessments, they don’t end up scoring and recording the results—much less billing for them.
In light of these challenges, payers reimburse electronic assessments at a significantly higher rate—typically 3x or more than the rate for paper-based assessments. Payers want providers to conduct behavioral health assessments.
PreValuate™: A Care-Focused Approach to Behavioral Health Assessments
With Altruis PreValuate™, patients complete self-administered electronic behavioral health assessments on a tablet when they arrive for their appointment or as part of their visit. Software automatically and immediately scores completed assessments—scored results are visible to staff, but not to patients.
When scores indicate cause for concern, staff see recommended actions to take. If additional electronic assessment(s) are appropriate, those pop up and can be provided to the patient while he or she is still on site. Staff also see whether they need to schedule a separate follow-up screening appointment—or immediately alert the patient’s physician.
Altruis provides all the needed technology, support, and EHR integration—and ensures clients stay ahead of the curve when it comes to new types of assessments.
A No-Risk Pricing Model that Puts Patient Wellbeing First
PreValuate™ assessments and the technology they require are available for all patients, regardless of insurance status, at no cost. Period. Clients only pay Altruis a percentage of the reimbursement for fee-for-service patients after those funds have been successfully collected.
PreValuate™ automatically identifies the patients who complete the assessment(s) and are eligible for fee-for-service reimbursement. Altruis then bills the appropriate payer and collects on the client’s behalf. This supports the 100% contingency-based pricing model that prioritizes patient care.
Why this model? Because for us, PreValuate™ is about more than enhancing our clients’ performance under rising fee-for-value and legacy fee-for-service agreements.
It’s about ensuring patients with behavioral health needs don’t slip through the cracks simply because they don’t ask—or don’t know to ask—for the right kind of help.
